Weirdness

I don't get this. Weird things are happening in Netscape... Things don't seem to be loading properly. I don't know what the hell is happening. I'm getting weird 'the file / cannot be found' errors when trying to load the main page. It works fine in IE. I just don't get it. If anyone can help out, please email me Update: It seems to be working now... I have no idea what has happened.

Facts

Guess I learned something today: The Zimmerman Telegram was a telegram written to the government of Mexico by the Foreign Secretary of the German Empire, Arthur Zimmermann, during World War One on January 16, 1917. It proposed that Mexico should ally itself with Germany if the United States were to enter the war. It also suggested that, were Mexico to launch a pre-emptive strike on the United States, it would have Germany's backing and would be rewarded with Texas, New Mexico and Arizona if the war was won. God... I'm such a history nerd.

Rasputin’s Penis

It seems that the first Russian museum of erotica is opening in St. Petersburg, Russia. On display, they have Rasputin's perserved Penis. For those who aren't familar with the tales of Rasputin's antics, he was born in 1869 in Siberia, arrived in St. Petersburg in 1911 and within a few years had become one of the most influential men in government circles. His rise to preeminence was due to his close relationship with Nicholas II’s wife, Alexandra. The heir to the throne suffered from hemophaelia, and only Rasputin could stop the boy’s bleeding. Because of this, Alexandra believed he was a holy man sent to protect Alexis and she kept him close by at all times. Wikipedia has a great amount of detail on the history of his life. All in all though, the pictures of his penis are pretty umm... interesting. The article sums it all up well:
There is one exhibit in the museum which makes Knyazkin be especially proud of. This is the 30-centimeter preserved penis of Grigory Rasputin. “Having this exhibit, we can stop envying America, where Napoleon Bonaparte’s penis is now kept. … Napoleon’s penis is but a small ”pod“ it cannot stand comparison to our organ of 30 centimeters…” the head of the museum said.

Whew!

I was signing into my Blogger account today, I noticed a small text ad in the text area to sign up for Gmail!. I signed up for the email list when Gmail was publicily available, but I never recieved a reply or anything. Now today I happend upon a little miracle. I'm all set up and ready to go... maybe once I start getting email and stuff I'll comment further on the interface and the like. This is all very exciting right now - this had made my day

Exams are done!

I finished my final exam yesterday. It was Microeconomics, which was suprisingly easy considering how hard all of our midterms have been. Basically the final exam was a complete do over of the midterms. There were complete identical questions. I knew the correct LETTER of most of the multiple choice questions before I even read the answers. It was just awesome... Now to pack up and get going home today. I can't wait

Secret Life

My Secret Life as a Prostitute has recently grabbed my attention. It's a very diary of a woman who operates a secret life as a call girl... It's very captivating. Yeah, I should be studying - but I'm not. On the upside, I'm finished today at 5. Then I'll have all the more time to read interesting blogs like this.

Busy Little Bee

Wow.. what a crazy two days it has been for me. Yesterday was a crazy mental study day. She (SHE knows who SHE is) and I wrote our study sheets together for our Decision Analysis exam today. Things were more interesting than I ever expected - she can make even the dullest taks enjoyable. She took me back to Guelph with her and I slept over. It was a nice quiet night of TV and relaxation - it was nice to get out of Waterloo and away from my roommates. She kept me from studying, which in hindsight turned out alright - The exam was pretty easy. The quality time was more than worth it. I'm just sad that summer is coming - we say we're going to stay friends and keep talking, but I guess we'll see.... It's weird that we've never ended up together. We've both liked each other multiple times within the past year and a half - seems we can never get it together at the same time. It's really hard for me to think, but I've recently decided we're just not meant to be Coming back to Waterloo today was a bit embrassing. Everyone likes to create wild, crazy stories about the night - when none of that actually happened. They just don't get it... god, I hope I don't ever sound like that when I talk to them about their lady friends...

Comments

WTF, I guess I broke the comments again. I have no clue how that happened - I haven't changed a thing. I don't really have to time to sort out things for a while, so I guess that I'll just have to suffer for a couple of days. I have exams on Tues and Wed that I'm totally not ready for yet, so I'm buckling down now. It will get fixed though, I promise. In the meantime, Email me

w.bloggar

I've been using w.bloggar recently to update the site, and I freaking love it. It makes it easy to updates blogs of pretty much any type. It can publish Blogger, b2, Movable Type, Livejournal, blah blah blah. I used to update via the Blogger website, but that got annyoing in a hurry. With w.bloggar, I can just open the program and type away. It has all the HTML tags and other little features easily accessible, so I no longer have to remember what's what. It has made my life so much easer... I throughly suggest that you check it out if you have any blogging to do.

3 weeks gone...

Well, this site is almost 3 weeks old now and I thought that it would be a good time to take a step back and reflect about the direction that I see things heading. I really envisoned starting a pure links blog. I thought I would just post interesting links from all the sources that I head on a daily basis, provide a bit of commentary or personal experience and that would be all. Turns out, I've really been writing a whole lot more personal stuff than I ever thought I would. While I've stayed away from some topics (love), I think I really like moving towards that direction. I'd really like for you guys to be able to understand my life - to better understand where I'm coming from when I write what I do. In the future, I'm aiming to combine these two things to create something interesting to read. I will try to provide interesting articles, sites and services from around the internet - as well as throwing in the odd personal nugget or two. That allows me to serve the best of both worlds... without delving too deep into crazy journal/diary ramblings about love and life and stuff. I do have a LiveJournal for that stuff - although I rarely post, and when I do no one ever reads it so I don't really see the point. All in all though, I like where things are going, considering where they came from and I hope that I can continue on this path in the future. I'm open to suggestions/comments about the direction of the site or my personal writing style. So let me know. But in the meantime... Y'All Come Back Now! Ya hear!

Ramblings...

I decided that I need a new windows wallpaper... I'm sick and tired of the plain azure blue background that I have now. I spent about an hour trying to find something interesting and artsy, but without luck. I just don't want a wallpaper that *EVERYONE* else has, like some stupid Matrix, South Park, or Simpsons one. I want something unqiue - that has been tremendously hard to find. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great... if not - scroll down some more. There is some actual 'interesting' content below. On a completely random note - I'm still looking for sites to exchange links with. If you want to trade - e-mail me. It doesn't get any easier than this folks...

Canadian Apology

Yeah, it's old and you've likely already seen it, but I was talking about the famous "truly Canadian apology to the USA" the other day with some friends and I found the full transcript. The only reason that Snopes has it listed as not quite true is because it was actually delivered by Colin Mochrie, not Rick Mercer. Everything in here is so very true, especially the ending... constantly apologizing is such a Canadian thing. My favourite passage however concerns the sport we all know and love:
I'm sorry we beat you in Olympic hockey. In our defence I guess our excuse would be that our team was much, much, much, much better than yours. As word of apology, please accept all of our NHL teams which, one by one, are going out of business and moving to your fine country.
Turns out you can also see the video of the segment. I can't really verify if that's it or anything, because I refuse to be a party to any Real product... but check it out if you're so inclined. This all makes me think that I should get back into the swing of watching This Hour As 22 Minutes again. Satitire and I seem to get along quite well, too bad that Jon Stewart's Daily show has occupied much of my thirst for that sort of program. I really think I should get back and support Canada once again... just a thought

Wanna Cyber?

God, I just finished laughing the hardest I've ever laughed in my entire life. I was reading Cool CyberSex Logs from a forum called Cyber Sex Gone Wrong. They're hilarious logs of a guy being a total tool trying to have cybersex. It's funny as hell. Here's my fav:
Partner6: So you're really a 18 yr old girl right? J-Dogg: Yeah, J for Julie. Partner6: So whats with the "Dogg" J-Dogg: Uh, It's cause I'm into the latina gangs and sh*t. You know, rollin with tha homies and sh*t. Partner6: Oh, uh ok thats cool. So you ever seen a gun? J-Dogg: Yeah like I got 6 guns. Partner6: Thats cool, so you wanna see my gun? J-Dogg: hehe, of course baby. Partner6: I pull off my pants and show you my "gun". J-Dogg: Ohh, it's so big. Partner6: Yeah, what you want to do? J-Dogg: Umm, i guess stroke it or something. Partner6: It likes that. J-Dogg: aight. Partner6: Keep talking to me baby... J-Dogg: I kiss you on the mouth, hard, but then gently. Partner6: Mmmm, daddy like. J-Dogg: I unzip my pants... Partner6: Yes, show me what you got. J-Dogg: I pull out my schlong, and rub it on your breasts... Partner6: WTF?! J-Dogg: Oh sh*t, I meant, your schlong! your schlong! Partner6: I've had it with you queers trying to cyber me, I only f*ck women... J-Dogg: Sh*t just don't shoot me man, I wasn't serious about the guns I have, I'm unarmed! Partner6: You dipsh*t. J-Dogg: I whimper to myself... J-Dogg: please don't shoot me Mr.
Sure it's mean as hell... but I friggin love it.

Digusting

I saw over on this Boing Boing post, a pretty interesting survey from the BBC that examines people's threshold's and viewpoints towards what's digusting. I think the conclusions were pretty interesting - it seems that they're pretty much able to predict what people are going to find digusting, and in general the people find things to be of the relatively same digust level. Interesting stuff.... try the survery for yourself.

Gaw

Well, I'm bored beyond belief. I think I've finally bit the bullet - I'm sick and tired of studying, but I have to keep going. I read for like 30 mins, and then I simply can't remember a single thing that I just read. My mind is total mush - I just can't focus on what's going on around me. I'm just counting the minutes (7620 now), until I'm done with exams. I can't freaking wait. I'm going to get an entire weekend of quiet bliss before I have to start work on May 3. That'll be a little nervewracking, but I can only take one problem at a time. In the meantime, I found an interesting article about how not to write metaphors. It gives metaphors from actual GCSE essays, that are totally hilarious. A couple of my favourites:
The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free cashpoint. She was as easy as the Daily Star crossword.
God... people can be so stupid.

Master and Commander

God, where did the day go? It feels like I just woke up, but it's actually around 8pm. As I write this, I'm listening to the Leafs game on the radio. They're losing 1-0 to the Flyers. They better pull it out - I have money riding on this game. I do know where about 2 hours of my day went. Steve and I watched Master and Commander, and I must say that I loved it. It was everything that I thought I was going to get and so much more. First off, I loved the action scenes. I really liked the realism of the battles. You really felt that you were there, fighting and feeling what all the men felt. Things seemed pretty accurately portrayed, with large amounts generic crew members, as well as having many young crewmen. It all felt very real to me. As well, I liked the overall story that was portayed. I really liked both Russell Crowe and the Doctor's character. I don't know who real a relationship like that would be in the time (a large of amount of back talk and the like), but it really made the movie interesting. Their interaction really showed that Crowe's character was a real person, not just an asshole captain who thought he was above everyone else. I don't know what else to say really - just rent the movie. Sure, if you're a history buff like me you're going to be plagued with nitpicking the historical inaccuracies and emblishments of the story - but please please overlook them. It's well worth forgetting your rational brain for a couple of hours to watch the exciting battle action. NOTE: As I was writing this, the Leafs scored. The score is now 1-1. I think that writing entries might be a good luck charm... maybe I have the power...

Study, Study Study

Today I'm planning on pretty much studying all day. I don't know how much time that will leave for interesting site action (and for the rest of the week), but I'll do my best. I'm planning on taking a study break today sometime to watch Master and Commander. I really can't wait. I'll let you guys know what I think about it. I'm sure it's going to be awesome... (saying that, I'm likely going to be disapointed now)

Time to waste?

I've been screwing around with stupid flash arcade games. My two favourites are Tower Blaster and Defend Your Castle. They're good for about an hour each, and that's pretty bad for me because I have a great deal of studying to do for my two exams next week. Hopefully I'll just spread that feeling of uselessness around the internet! Woah!

Kill Bill: Vol 1

Just finished watching Kill Bill: Vol 1 here and all I'm able to say is WOW. The movie was everything I dreamt of and so much more, I can't believe that I totally missed the boat on this one. The action was cool, but not overbearing on the overall plot line. I love a good revenge story, and boy is Kill BIll ever one of those. I think I'm going to go and see Vol 2 sometime over the next few days. I just can't wait to see how the story all ends up. It's just too damn intriguing to me. This will all taught me a very valuable lesson: Never doubt Tarantino

Movie Day!

Steve and I went on a movie rampage today. At Futureshop I bought Blade Runner, Goodfellas and Johnny Mnemonic (hey, it was $6.99). Those are movies that I've been been sitting on buying for a long time - I finally got things together and pulled the trigger. We also rented two movies. I had a $20 gift card from Blockbuster that's been burning a whole in my pocket. We decided to rent Kill Bill: Vol. 1, and Master and Commander. I haven't seen either of these movies, mainly because I've been so involved in school and stuff. I'm really excited for the TV prospects today... I'll let you guys know what I think.

Post Road-Trip Wrap Up

Wow, our day yesterday was sure a lot of fun. We drove from Waterloo to Yorkdale mall to parkand take the subway downtown. The traffic was actually pretty good - very suprising for a midday 401 trip. There were a bunch of trucks and stuff, but nothing too bad. What we thought would be a total of 2.5 hours or so, ended up being 2 hours. What a nice break. We took the subway to Queen and at at Mr. Greenjeans in the Eaton Center. That is a place that has a special place in my heart. As a child, that always used to be THE place to go for our family when we went to any Blue Jays or Maple Leafs game. Since we're silly suburb folk, we would always make an entire day for the trip. Mr. Greenjeans was always a highlight for me - I just love their Buffalo Chips. Afterwards, we spent a number of hours screwing around on Younge and Queen Streets. It was a lot of fun, and seemed that the guys I was with were way more hick than me. They were so impressed with City Hall, Osgoode hall and a bunch of other silly sites. Steve really wanted to go to the CN Tower... but I overruled that project. $15 to go up an elevator does not really jive with my financial sensibility. The game itself was also pretty interesting. It was the Bluejays vs. the Red Sox. It was Pedro Martinez against Roy Halliday. It was a real good pitching matchup - which translated into a nice quick game. I won't get all baseball nerdy on you guys, this is no baseball blog and I doubt you care about the intricite details of the game. I'll stick to what's interesting. We had a couple of Liberal MPP's. They were talking politics and stuff for the entire game. That would have been really really boring and annoying if they had not been talking about intricate details of the Liberal Party and what they thought about different people. This was all stuff that they were not willing to talk about in the media or anything. Yeah, I was eavesdropping, but damn - it was pretty cool. We eventually ended up talking to them about the Leafs game and stuff. They seemed like interesting people.... especially for politicians. There were also alot of drunk people around the game. People were using the money they saved from the $2 ticket promotion to invest in some quality beer. It was good for a laugh or two. Some scary, loud guy was screaming at Gabe Kapler in right field. It started out being really funny, then he got totally out of control - He was screaming the f word, bitch, and other obscene stuff. That's all fine with me, but there were a lot of kids right around. I'm suprised that no one told the guy to shut the hell up. On the way home, we stopped in Guelph to drop off Ben. We had some awesome, cheap chinese food. It was great ending, to a great day. It really reminded me that a really do like my roomates. I often really forget that because of all the stress and tension that we go through around here. We end up buried so deep in the books that we really forget about the fun we can have. We should go that again sometime.

I'm looking for people to trade with links with. If you wouldn't mind exchanging, please e-mail me. I'm tired of this site really not getting any hits.... Please help

Road Trip!

My roommates and I are heading on a road trip of sorts this afternoon. We're going to the Blue Jays game tonight and we're going to have plenty of time to screw around in the city. I just can't wait to dick around on Younge St. for 2 or 3 hours. The Blue Jays play the Red Sox, my favourite team - so I'm more than excited. The tickets were only $2 thanks to Coke. I haven't really been this excited in a long, long time. It'll be nice to get out of this house, and out of Waterloo just to actually laugh again. Exams have been killing me. The only crappy part of going to the Jays game is the fact that I'm totally going to be missing Game 7 of the Leafs series. I'd really like to be able to go and buy some tickets for the game when we're in the city, but I don't have $500+ dollars to spend on a scalpped tickets. We've had the Jays trip planned for weeks though, so we have to follow through....maybe one day when I'm making millions. In the meantime I must say, GO LEAFS GO

Test One Two

yeah.. I'm testing again. I really have to stop tinkering around I'm sorry folks. Please stay tuned.

Heathers

Wow... I just got finished watching Heathers, a very interesting movie from 1989 starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty. It's a very interesting movie that deals with teen suicide. It's really screwed up. IMDB provides a pretty good plot summary:
Three high school girls named Heather run an iron clad social clique at high school. One of their anointees, Veronica, isn't sure she wants to fit into the clique, particularly when she has to snub some of her old friends at the Heathers' behest. When Veronica meets the new guy at school, she starts pulling away from the clique, while some of the more popular students start showing up dead with suicide notes.
I must admit, I was a little skeptical at first. The movie sounds like a crazy chick flick, but it's really far from that. It's really something that's pretty unique. Christian Slater plays a psycho amazingly well - he really serves well as the heart and soul of the film. Being one who wasn't exactly cool at school and also from a really small town, I do not really identify with the interesting cliques and structure of the school. Still thought provoking and interesting none the less. This movie belongs on the list of the 100 Movies that Deserve More Love that I mentioned earlier. It was just great.

Deservin' Some Lovin'

Chud.com has an interesting look at 100 Movies that Deserve More Love. It's an expanded version after a recent article that appeared in an issue of Movie Insider. It lists movies that have been forgotten by the sands of time. The critera for the list seem a little questionable, ranging from movies that few people have heard of, to movies that everyone's heard of but few like. The introduction pretty much sums it all up for me:
For all the attention spurted across the chests of a handful of movies each year, there are dozens more that are shunted aside, trampled underfoot or otherwise treated to the shitty end of the stick by the grinding gears of the movie machine. Many of these movies deserve to languish in obscurity, but there are plenty that are worth more than that and that’s why we’ve rolled up our sleeves to retrieve some unloved and under-appreciated gems from the dustbin of history.
I really liked this list a lot. I must really agree with the choice of Rounders. It really shows the seedy underground of the poker world, and the choices that people make. It stars Matt Damon and Ed Norton in really excellent performances. Being one who loves Texas Hold 'em, this is a really a great movie. It shows everything I wish I could be in the poker world..... maybe one day. For now, it's Pokerstars for me. Any movies that should be on the list? Any amazing picks that you'd like to point out? Go ahead, post comments.

100 Greatest Movie Characters

Premiere Magazine has an interesting look at the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of all time. I think it's a pretty interesting look. I totally agree with a large portion of the list - Vito Corleone is sure number 1 in my book as well. I think that recently I had totally forgot how freaking amazing the Godfather is/was. We sat down recently and watched all three in sucession (hey, it's exam season - I only have time to burn) and all I can say is wow. I do have a couple of problems with the last though. I would have guessed that James Bond was higher than number 5. He's had so many movies and is so ingrained in the popular culture that I would have thought it would be more widely accepted. This is why I'm not usually a fan of lists like these though, you end up nitpicking and arguing with the little minute details of one person's list. Who the hell are they to lay this out? I really don't think this was voted on.

P2P Madness

Ubersite has an interesting examination of the file name conventions and hilarious things that people will download on the internet. Basically, the guy goes through and renames some normal, music files into weirdo names. He started out with renaming a Led Zeppelin file as "Naked boys dancing and eating cake", then another renamed to "My Ex-Girlfriend mowing the lawn naked" and so on. It's really an interesting look at how screwed up the world really is. This is funny and all, but I must say it's pretty mean. It's great to take advantage of perverts who like Naked Boys and cake or what have you - but how 'bout when it happens the other way? What happens when you're trying to download some TV or movie or something and you end up getting some horrible gay porn or something? That's why I'm usually sticking to trusted download sites like Suprnova or Overnet. Kazaa is really just too easy to mislead people... I know I've seen a load of sick shit I wish I had never seen.

Registrations are annoying

BugMeNot is a great website that allows you to bypass annoying registration and sign up pages around the internet. It works great for sites like the NY Times who require you to have a login, but have no purpose or reason to actually need one. They give you little or nothing of value for signing up - so why give them the pleasure of collecting valuable demographic data? They have logins for 546 sites on there.... pretty damn useful if you ask me. BugMeNot also has a great bookmarklet feature that allows you to automatically check the site for an acceptable login, without visiting the main page of the site. I love this idea, it's made it to my Mozilla personal toolbar already.

Encyclopedia Excitement

Wikipedia is one of the best website's I've ever found. It's basically an open source, easily edited encyclopedia. Any one can go and edit, any page, at any time. After all the crap that people have had to go through to find articles on sites like Encarta, Wikipedia is easy and painless. It's my one stop shop for fact checking. I don't know how literate that little rant is, I think that Wikipedia explains it all very well:
As a freely-editable document, Wikipedia is subject to some unique hardships not present in more traditional paper encyclopedias. It has a self-healing system in place to deal with these challenges, and even a page designed to explain these systems. The content of Wikipedia is entirely created by its users, and is managed and operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia is free content, meaning free to use, free to edit, and free to copy and redistribute.
Also from the Wiki Media empire, Wikisource, Wikibooks, and Wikiquote. All great sites in their own right.

Want you to want me

The Ladder Theory is an interesting theory of love and people that it seems that all of my friends have bought into recently. It's all the talk around these parts, so I thought you guys might want to check it out. It pretty much sums up how people rate the opposite sex, and effectively displays the male brian. It's right. It works - simple as that. Here's a basic overview of the basic structure of the ladder.
So it should be self-evident, if you are following this at all, that the people you want to have sex with the most will be at the top of the ladder. Descending down to the bottom of the ladder we pass the following people: 1. The people we really want, who may even be out of our league, are on top 2. Then come the people we like 3. Moving further down we pass the people who we would fuck if we were intoxicated and would admit to doing it later. 4. At the bottom are the people we would fuck drunk, and would lie about doing it later. Clinging to the bottom are the girls that are wolf ugly. These are women so ugly you would chew your own arm off to get away rather than fuck them. Usually fake teeth, or the loss of several hundred pounds can move a woman up from wolf ugly.
The basic premise is that unlike men, women have a friends ladder as well. You simply cannot move between the friends ladder and the lovers ladder of a girl, otherwise you fall into the deep, dark despair of no man's land. Men have only one ladder. If a man is attracted to a woman, they simply cannot be friends. It's summed up well in the article as Yes Virginia, They All Want to Bang You. Speaking from personal experience, it's really as simple as that. Many women think they have friends who are guys, but there are three basic reasons for that: (from the article)
1. The guy is gay 2. The guy does not find you attractive. 3. The guy already has a woman much higher than you on the ladder
Sure, the guy looks likes a total loser - but damn, the man is right. It's really thought provoking about some current things are that are going on around these parts. I'd really like to hear what others think about this theory - leave some comments.

My god

I'm really pretty much spent today. I just got back from writing my Organizational Behaviour exam, and let's just say it wasn't a lot of fun. Way more challenging than I ever expected it to be. It really kind of caught me off guard. Now I get a big 1 hour break before I have to buckle down and start studying for my managerial accounting exam which is tomorrow. My god... I can't wait until 5 tomorrow afternoon - it's going to be a real fun night. I really can't wait until Tuesday. We're going to the Blue Jays game, against the Red sox. I LOVE the Red Sox, so it's the best of both worlds. The tickets were only $2, because of some Coca-Cola promotion. That's just fine by me. 52 Minutes to go. Wish me luck.

Casino Odyssey

While I'm posting older articles of interest, I point you to A Casino Odyssey over on Kuro5hin. It is a very interesting tale of the underground of the casino world, and just how easy to large amounts of money playing assorted tournaments. Here's a little excerpt that gives a better overview than I ever could:
In 1990, our neighboring state of Mississippi legalized gambling. Two years later, for the first time in my life I walked into a casino. This was the beginning of an odyssey which would, more through faith in math and hard work than luck, and against all normal expectation, turn my debt into a healthy savings. It would see me develop an appreciation for 60-year-old Scotch and and US$50 steaks. It would show me a great deal of the excitement and drama people go to casinos for. And in the end it would leave me and my friends with a deep, abiding hatred of these places and a terrible understanding of how they affect most of their clientele.
This is a four part story. After reading the first part, make sure you continue to number two, three and four. I don't know if I should be really reading this article. We're planning on going to the Casino some time soon, in which case I wouldn't like to be so cocky going in there. I need to remember that I am a loser, and I will lose. This will prevent me from losing hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Fear is overpowering. Reading tales like these get me just too damn confident - but it's way too good to look away.

Radioactive Boy Scout

Very interesting article from Harper's Magazine about a boy scout who built a breeder reactor. It's pretty screwed up to think about the great lengths and enterprising kid can go to for science. Radioactivity is such a mysterious, crazy thing - who knew that it was that accessable from common stuff? Here's a brief overview:
To obtain americium-241, David contacted smoke-detector companies and claimed that he needed a large number of the devices for a school project. One company agreed to sell him about a hundred broken detectors for a dollar apiece. (He also tried to "collect" detectors while at scout camp.) David wasn't sure where the americium-241 was located, so he wrote to BRK Electronics in Aurora, Illinois. A customer-service representative named Beth Weber wrote back to say she'd be happy to help out with "your report." She explained that each detector contains only a tiny amount of americium-241, which is sealed in a gold matrix "to make sure that corrosion does not break it down and release it." Thanks to Weber's tip, David extracted the americium components and then welded them together with a blowtorch.
I don't know - I'm sure a lot of people have seen this article before, but I don't care because I freaking love it. This is a must read article for anyone loves the bizarre.

Breedster, yet again

It seems to me like a lot of people are coming here looking for Breedster. That's great - I love that site too. Just want any of you curious folk to know that I currently have 10 or so eggs that need someone to look after them. If that's you - email me. I'll hook you up.

Test One two

Another test... god I'm an idiot.

Exams

Things might be slow around these parts for the rest of the week. I have 3 exams, which I really need to be studying for and I just don't know how much time I'm going to have to spare for the wonderful internet. Don't despair however, I'll try to make at least 1 post a day - please stay tuned. Things will be back to the rocking usual fun in a short while. Thank you

Reverse Dictionary

Know the meaning of the world you're looking for? Have no idea what that word is? Then OneLook Reverse Dictionary is for you. Simply enter a brief idea of the concept you're looking for, and bam! - it returns list of phrases that are related to that concept. It's a really neat idea - I hope the dictionary gets even better, it's only in beta. For example, if you entered 'being tried twice for the same crime', it would come up with a list of related words, with double jeopardy. I do believe it works quite well.

How 'bout those Leafs?

I didn't get a chance to watch much of the game tonight, but I'm happy to hear that the Leafs beat the Senators 2-0 today. It seems that Belfour played awesome. He had a 37 save shutout - an amazing performance. It was a bit scary though towards the end... the Leafs were scrambling. The Leafs only had 17 shots in the game - god bless Eddy!!!! Might this be the year? I sure hope so.

Proofreading is fun

Distributed Proofreaders is an interesting project that was founded in 2000 to assist Project Gutenberg by allowing quick and efficient proofreading of texts. I really like Distributed Proofreaders because you can feel like you're a part of something so much more important without dedicating huge amounts of time to a particular project. Any contribution will do, even a page or two a day is valued. This allows thousands of people to work together to get the job done. It's really a lot of fun - I find it's really helped me a lot to really pay attention to my own writing/proofreading of essays and such. It really has taught me to slow down and look at the little details. Check it out, your contribution will be very much valued.

The sordid tales of a 'phone actress'

An article about a girl who answers a sex phone line really caught my attention today. It's very interesting to see the sort of bullshit that girls like these have to go through from guys just to make the $9 an hour. Sure it's easy, but it can't be a fun time. This part made me laugh beyond belief (guys can be so stupid):
On one of my Female Fantasy calls, I talked with a very interesting guy. I started off by telling him I was fantasizing about my roommate when he asked me if she was home. I told him she wasn't and he asked if I could call her. After I made it clear to him that my roommate could not get in on the action, I went through the same runaround with a request for my next-door neighbor. After he realized that there wouldn't be another female in the room with me, he asked if I was watching porn.
I kind of wish that I could make that sort of money just sitting on my ass and talking to girls though - Although I would think that many of the jobs for men would be in homosexual phone services (sorry, not something I'm intersted it). It seems the girl in this article got the job via Monster.com. I guess that's where I'm heading now....just to make sure

Party in the Bathoom

The Writings on the Stall is an interesting site that displays assorted writings from public bathrooms around the United States. It's a wonder what people will write when they don't attach their name to it. My favourite one is Writing #37:
Engineering building. San Diego, California 92182. Men's restroom, 1st floor. Roses are red Violets are blue I have VD Now you do too!
There are plenty of other funny ones on there. Anyone else have any interesting writings they have seen/written? I've often thought about funny things to write and such, but never have the nerve/writing instrument that's necessary.

The Worst Rock Band Ever

No matter how much I think that Nickelback is the worst band ever, that's simply not the case. That honour went to Montley Crue, on this analysis over at Giant Nylon Hair Net. Nickelback did make the contest (of course) which definetely shows that they have some level of suckery. They lost in the first round to Live. Here's the breakdown:
Live vs. Nickelback: Nickelback are another one of those bands that sounds like all the other college rock radio bands. Live think too much, and fall prey to the same over-emoting and anthem-writing that Creed indulge in. Relax, guys, it's only rock n' roll, but when you do it, we don't like it. The suckier: Live.
I agree with that decision, and pretty much ever on one on the list. I would have liked to see Nickelback or Creed take the overall title - but I see the point. Let's give them some time to suck even more and check back in in 10 years. They'll have a shot then, I'm sure.

Blog Haters

Just read this funny article entitled 'Why I Hate Personal Weblogs' and it made me laugh a lot. I don't know what kind of blog author I am - then of those really fit someone who doesn't write a lot of meaningful subjects. I try not to get too deeply involved with my own opinions and thoughts throughout my writing here. I think I should leave that to the experts, and as such, I like to link to highly informed articles from credible publications to provide those expert opinions. Woah, enough seriousness though - I really liked the statement of audience that was included:
Statement of Audience --------------------- I realize that nothing I say matters to anyone else on the entire planet. My opinions are useless and unfocused. I am an expert in nothing. I know nothing. I am confused about almost everything. I cannot, as an individual, ever possibly know everything, or even enough to make editorial commentary on the vast vast majority of things that exist in my world. This is a stupid document; it is meaningless drivel that I do not expect any of the several billion people on my planet to actually read. People who do read my rambling, incoherent dumbfuckery are probably just as confused as I am, if not moreso, as they are looking to my sorry ass for an opinion when they should be outside playing Frisbee with their dog or screwing their life partner or getting a dog or getting a life partner. Anyone who actually takes the time to read my bullshit probably deserves to ingest my fucked up and obviously mistaken opinions on whatever it is that I have written about.
That pretty much sums up how I feel, but I promise I won't be stuffing any opinions down anyone's throats... you might get hurt.

Comments

Comments are back and better than ever. I signed up for an account at Haloscan. Very easy to set up - it only took about 3 minutes, much shorter than I ever expected. Had I know it would be so quick, maybe I would have fixed the comments as soon as they broke the first time... anyways, please comment away.

Now or Never?

My roomates and I were just sitting around and chatting and came up with an interesting idea for a reality tv show. I have no idea if this already exists, but I wouldn't be suprised if it does, but here's our idea: Basically, women who are fed up that their boyfriends won't propose/set a date for their wedding come on and basically say that they have to get married right now, or she's through. The best part is that she would be standing right there in a wedding dress, with all their friends and family when he got home from work or whatever. I think it would be really interesting to see how these guys react to all this pressure. I'm sure that most of them would spazz out at first, and then eventually cave in and they would all live happily ever after. This idea just struck me as being interesting. First off, it has the potential for the great conflict that we all love in reality television. I'm assuming that the guys woudn't be too happy about this - Lots of cursing, screaming and arguments with the girl and his family members should make for great tv. Secondly, it could show the power of love to rule over all. Which although is important - is something that we want to try to avoid. We are aiming on being on a sleazy network like Fox, not some classy one like Life that's concerned with all that mushy crap.

1984

Just stumped upon a searchable online version of 1984 by George Orwell. It's a classic book that I think everyone should read, especially because it raises questions about society's structure and organization. The Literature Network also has extensive notes and summaries of each character and chapter. I think this would come in pretty handy if one, say... had to complete a book report on a rather limited time frame and was unable to read the book. I guess the movie could also do if you must. Either way though - the ideas in 1984 are something we should all look at.

Learning by Sports

Management by Baseball is a very interesting blog that takes a particular baseball decision, or event and breaks it down from both the baseball and the picture managment perspective. I find it pretty interesting how many managerial lessons can be learned from examining a sport like Baseball. The site gives a pretty good introduction to it all:
What do Hall of Fame baseball managers like Connie Mack & John McGraw have in common with today's business leaders? Why are baseball managers like Joe Torre & Dusty Baker better role models for management than corporate heroes like Jack Welch, Ken Lay & Bill Gates? And just what does Peter Drucker have to do with Oriole ex-manager Earl Weaver? Management consultant & ex-baseball reporter Jeff Angus shows you almost everything you need to know about management you can learn from baseball.
Interesting enough, the author is takes a completely different spin on the relationship between Managment and Basball than Michael Lewis took in his award-winning book, Money Ball. Lewis basically says that "Everything Baseball Needs to Know About Franchise Management, it Can Learn From Wall Street", while the author of Management by Baseball, takes the approach that "Everything You Need to Know About Management You Can Learn From Baseball". It's a pretty dramatic viewpoint, which provides a nice contrast to the ideas of Moneyball. The entire model and comparsion to Lewis is explained here. This site is a must read for anyone who is interested in baseball or management but, it's especially interesting to someone like me who loves both.

Test One Two...

Just tinkering around... things are acting crazy. Please disregard. Thank you.

Fuck Face!?!?

Seems that Billy Ripken's 1989 Fleer Baseball Card includes a hidden obscenity. According to this story at Snopes, Ripken had the phrase FUCK FACE written on the knob of the bat when his picture was taken. It appears to have been a joke by his teammates, although many people simply don't buy that story. From the site:
Despite Ripken's admission, many card collectors found it rather implausible that Ripken, the photographer, and the card company all failed to notice what was written on the bat and suggested that one or more of them knew about the obscenity but deliberately allowed it to slip through the production process.
Feel has since taken great steps to cover up the offending phrase, but thanks to the greatness of eBay you can purchase the orginal card at auction starting at $3.99 US - What a Steal! I don't know why, but I find all of this incredibly funny. Anyways, here is a clear picture of the card, just in case you missed it somewhere along the speech.

Trailer Park Boys

I must admit, that I'm a huge man of the Trailer Park Boys, an awesome Canadian produced comedy on Showcase. Recently I've purchased the DVD's. They have Seasons 1 & 2, as well as the newly released Season 3. If you haven't seen the show, I really suggest that you check it out. The DVD describes it as "...branding Trailer Park Boys the best comedy on Canadian television seems sorely insufficient". I agree - Trailer Park Boys is about the only good Canadian produced show that has been produced in recent memory. For those of you who aren't familar with the show, here's a brief synopsis from the website:
First introduced to audiences in 2001, this Showcase Original Series follows the story of Julian, Ricky and Bubbles—three guys whose view of the world has been shaped by their experiences growing up in Sunnyvale Trailer Park. At the end of last season, Julian, Mr. Lahey and Randy landed themselves in jail after botching the heist of an ATM machine. Despite his involvement in the crime, Ricky somehow avoided arrest and, left behind at the park, took over as Trailer Park Supervisor.
My favourite episode is number 3, from season 3, where after getting out of jail, Ricky and Julian open up an illegal gas station in the park. It's totally hilarious because they eventually get busted and Ricky is able to successfully frame Cory and Trevor for the entire caper. I've never laughed so hard in all my years... So, buy the DVD's (or maybe download them), and if you live in Canada there is a new season beginning this Sunday at 9pm on Showcase. Please check it out - you will not be sorry.

Track your music

Audioscrobbler is an interesting plugin for pretty much ever audio player out there. The plugin sends the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server. You can see my profile here, which provides a great deal of track information. Using all this data, you are able to see recommendations , which seems pretty useful in finding some new and interesting bands. I also just find it intersting to track all the music I'm listening to, just to see my weird little trends. I really like this plugin because it's pretty hassle free. Once you set it all up it opereates without any user input. It's just there. As well don't have any concerns about bandwidth usage or anything - I have no problems and the internet here sucks.

More Nickelback Suckery

Just saw over on linkfilter, what is described as 'The Nickelback Formula'. They link to this mp3 of two of their songs overlaid each other. It seems that 'How You Remind Me' and 'Someday' are basically identical. Same arrangement, same temp, same key, same everything. Boy do they suck.

Breedster part 2

I've been around Breedster somemore recently. I love the site, I love the idea - I only wish that there was more room for interaction among people. Maybe if there was some sort of realtime chat or public message board or something, people would be able to interact more easily. After some reading, I found out that I could list my picture on here:
My Breedster profile
I currently have 7 egges. If you want to tinker around with Breedster - please email me.

Keep Track of Your Bets with Friends

DozenHoles is a website that helps to keep track of all those friendly wages you have with your friends. I know it all gets very complicated, especially when dealing with my friends - Who owes who a beer? Who owes who a buck or two? This site helps you keep track of all that action - It helps ya make sure that you don't get screwed. A very interesting concept... check it out.

Nickelback is one sketchy band...

Before beginning, I must admit that I really used to like Canadian rockers Nickelback a lot. I really liked some of their older rocking tunes like Old Enough and Leader of men. In recent years however, I have come to the conclusion that Chad Kroeger creeps the hell out of me. It really hit when today when I was listening to their newest album. There is a track called 'Figured you out', which sounds innocent enough, but it is horribly creepy and dirty. There were two verses in particular that go me:
I like the white stains on your dress I love the way you pass the check And I love the good times that you wreck And I love your lack of self respect While you're passed out on the deck I love my hands around your neck
This is creepy and very confusing - especially coming from wanna be rock mega stars like nickelback. I've come to the conclusion that I can no longer listen to them. It's times like these I'm ashamed to be Canadian.

BitTorrent

Like Downloading? Yeah, me too...I've been using BitTorrent a lot recently, and I love it. It's great for downloading items of questionable legality, as well as business applications and programs. This question from the FAQ, explains the entire process quite well:
BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they are downloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible. BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.
I really love BitTorrent because of the Speed. At times when I've been unable to surf the net effectively (damn you rogers), I've been able to download at rated of 200k/sec. That's fine by me. If you're looking to get into the Torrent game, there are many sites out there. I'd recommend you start at SuprNova.org, or maybe Greenlight. Chances are that if it's not on either of those sites, it's not worth having.

Cannibalism & Human Cattle - Weird and Interesting Thoughts

I read this article on the BBC about a German Cannibal. a while back. It seems that he conducted a search on the internet to find his victim. He found a VOLUNTEER to be mutilated and killed. Before being killed, the two of them shared the man's flambéed penis. I know it's horrible, but it was good for a laugh or two around here today. We started being stupid about what human meat would taste like and decided it would be a good red meat, very similar to beef. This led us to a discussion about using human as cattle. What if there were no cows left (or animals for that matter), where would be get our red meat? Humans of course. Paul and I devised a movie plot where in a post-apocalyptic world humans would raise other humans as cattle to serve this hunger. The movie plot (don't want to give away too many details, we could make millions) involves classic struggle between the classes (Rancher vs. Cattle, and between the rich upper class who enjoys the meat) , forbidden love, animal rights and a clear visison that the human race is indeed destroying itself through violence and infighting. It's very Orwellian in nature.. I think we're going to write a script - just as a lark. Everyone thinks that we are crazy... They'll see though. They'll see!

Double or Nothing?

Looks like this British fellow is doing something I've always thought about. Betting everything he owns on a single spin of the roulette wheel. From the article:
A British man who has sold all his possessions, including his clothes, will stand in a rented tuxedo on Sunday and bet everything on a single spin of the roulette wheel.
Seems that he's worth about 75,000 pounds, a rather tidy sum in deed. All this gambling talk has really inspired me to go to a casino asap. As soon as exams are done, I promise. I only wish I had the balls this guy has. I feel nervous with $20 on the Board... I can't even imagine holding the $150,000 or so (Canadian) that he's going to have down.

New Look?

I just implemented a new template on the site. (Yeah, I should me studying managerial accounting... so what). It's nice, and it's red, so I'm happy. At least it doesn't look like every other lame Blogspot site out there anymore, so I think that's the best part. I got it off of Blogskins if anyone's looking. They have loads and loads of interesting looks. I know I could write one myself, but it's just too much damn work. If you have any questions/concerns/comments about the new layout - please ask away. I'm hoping that I didn't screw anything up. UPDATE:Yeah, so I broke the comments. I have no idea why, but I did. I guess that's another project for another day... I should really be studying now.

8mm Thoughts?

Today we rented 8mm . The other day we were joking around and being stupid and the idea of snuff porn came up. Of course snuff porn is a really weird topic that few people know a whole lot about. I still remember renting it with my brother when it first came out on video (1999 maybe), and we had no idea what we renting. We knew it was a little edgy, but my god - we had clue how edgy it was. I really liked it because it is sooooo fucked up and it showed about a complete topic that I had absolutely no idea existed. We rented it from Blockbuster and the guy gave us a really creepy look. Hey buddy, it may be sick, but IT'S NOT PORN!! It's a real movie..... I'm over 17 so rent just rent me the damn thing... mmmmkay? I'm guessing that it isn't a movie that they rent out often.

Tribute to Goatse.cx

We've all seen it, maybe by accident, maybe on purpose - but I'm sure it brought a reaction out of you. Maybe you laughed, maybe you cried, maybe you just ran away. Any you look at it, Goatse.cx has effected us all. It's nice that finally there is a tribute to this amazing page. It has all your favourites as well as real life pictures in action and other takes from popular culture. What a way to show you respect and undying love for this interesting corner of internet folklore.

Top 100 List

PC Magazine has a great list of the Top 100 Web Sites You Didn't Know you Couldn't Live Without. Lists like these are something that I usually avoid, but I think this one is pretty good. While there are a bunch of sites on there that I already read... I did find som new intersting ones. Arts & Letters Daily seems like an excellent spot for interesting articles around the internet. I found an intersting Ny Times article concerning European history from there. It said that if the French has lost to the invading Muslim army at Poitiers in 732, what impact would that have had on Europe and the spread of Islam. I know that alternate histories drive many historains crazy, but it's intresting to think about none the less. Anyways, loads of nice article links on Arts & Letters daily, a new bookmark for me. I'm sure there are others on there.... anyone have any other sites they can't live without that, that I likely don't know about? Leave a comment.... I'm always up for a good read or two.

Etc.

I have returned to Waterloo, in prepartion for my impending doom (exams), so I don't know how much attention I'm going to be able to focus around these parts in the coming days. I'd really hope that I'm able to spare a couple of minutes here and there to post an interesting link or two... but we will see. It's especially hard considering that our internet is painfully slow - it took about 3 minutes for the Blogger page to open up to make this update.... that's just silly But please stay tuned. Thank you

Email Attachments

This site is largely becoming based on cool, functional websites - but that's not by design, but I recently found a couple more that are worth sharing. YouSendIt is an alternative to sending huge attachments via Email. Instead, you go though YouSendIt, and upload the file directly to their servers. You to upload files up to 1GB in size to their server for 7 days, for someone to retrieve. It's damn handy and sure beats dealing with emails being refused because of huge attachments. Check it out.. As well, I saw on a MonkeyFilter post yesterday about a service called Dropload where you sign up for 50 megs of space and people are free to upload files in that space for you to download. I don't think it's quite as slick and YouSendIt, with all the signing up and such, but it still might be interesting to some. Damn though, I'm just waiting for Gmail, then all the problems of the world will be solved.

Beatallica!

Beatallica is a really interesting idea. They cover Beatles song, but in the style of Metallica. They're all available for download via BitTorrent, so check it out.... To avoid slamming their already hurting servers, here's a link right to the new torrent. And damn, their singer really sounds like James. I can't believe it.

Breedster

Breedster is an interesting new game. It is a cross between Friendster, tamagoitchi and an ant colony. You have to keep your avatar alive by eating and defecating, and create new offspring by fornicating with others. But you have limited amounts of energy so you have to keep coming back to make sure that you're properly healthy. Breedster is by invitation only but I have quite a few eggs to spare. So let me know if you're interested.

Random Thoughts

Today is Day 2. I think things are going alright. I hope it's all interesting enough of every one. If anyone has comments - please feel free to leave them. I'd really like to have a comment, ANY COMMENT on this site. I know many people aren't really reading it yet...but I hope that will change. I'm not going anywhere and I hope that I can provide interesting links and thoughts. Please hang around.

Web Reading? Your Thoughts?

I was turned onto textz.com recently when I was looking into Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy (I own the books, but they weren't near when when I needed a quote). It's an interesting website that has 761 plain text files. It's along the lines of Project Gutenberg, with the lines of legality blurred a bit. Anyways, although I find it extremely difficult to read a novel on the computer, I find that based upon the speed I read books, I need to have them easy to access. Many people wholeheartedly refuse to read anything of any sort on their monitor - Let me know what you guys think.

The Rich get Richer?

Seems that J.Lo's mom won a 2.4 million jackpot while playing $1 slot in Atlantic City over the weekend. Damn, why can't I ever get lucky like that? Seems that everytime I go to Casino Niagara I come away losing way way more than I ever intended. Maybe my problem is that I've been playing games like Roulette and Blackjack - games that I know little about. I guess in the future I should stick to the annoying Wheel of Fortune Slots. They look so complicated but damn, I need to win 2.4 million. Doesn't matter though, for some reason I still can't wait until my next trip to the casino. I'll be 21 in a few months......... Las Vegas?!?!?!

Furl - Your web page filing cabinet

Furl is a great new webservice that lets you save and organize thousands of useful web pages ( the ones you want to save for future reference but then can never find again) in a personal "web page filing cabinet". It's great for saving articles like the NY Times and the like that will eventually go into a pay archive. Save it early, and save the money. You never know when an article will come in handy again. As well, Furl is great for sharing your interesting links to others. You can publish it via RSS, Email or simply through a webpage. You can see my Furl page here. Also, you can see my recently Furled entries below: (Just because I want to screw around with it.)
Check out Furl, I know that it's something I couldn't live without anymore. And remember it's not just for bookmarks!

IKEA founder overtakes Gates as world's richest

Seems that Bill Gates has been overtaken as the world's richest man by the founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad. It seems that this change is mostly as a result of the weak US dollar. I wonder how long it is until things swing around there though. Kamprad seems to be one of those guys who got rich for a reason. Seems that he has habits like flying economy class and the like. I guess that they say that a penny saved is a penny earned... you don't get rich by accident

Superman!

I've been on a bit of a comics kick lately. DC is really my company. I love both Batman and Superman. It's fitting that I found a link to Action Comics NO. 1. It's from June of 1938 and it's the first appearance of Superman. I find this pretty exciting because this comic is worth at least 75,000, and chances are that I will never ever be able to see one in person. I hope I can find additional comics like these. If anyone has any links let me know, I can't get enough of the old comics.

Label apologises for Bush

Seems that the label of a high-quality computer sleeve had a French text which contained an interesting message. It read:
"We are sorry that our President is an idiot. We didn't vote for him." Given recent strained relations between our two countries, it's good to see that not all Americans agree with the current administration.
This is friggin priceless! I wish that I knew exactly what product this was so that I could see it for myself. It seems just too good to be true. [Via Boing Boing]

Bicycle Riding on Square Wheels

I know it sounds crazy, but Stan Wagon has developed a bicycle that rides on square wheels. Apparently, it's able to ride smoothly over a road that looks like a bunch of speed bumps together (called a inverted catenary). Seems interesting enough, although I don't really see.... um.... the point. of it all. The page also sends out a challenge to all you crazy mathematicians out there:
So far, no one has found a road-and wheel combination in which the road has the same shape as the wheel. That's an intriguing challenge for mathematicians.
So get at it you crazy kids!!

Tower Blaster

Tower Blaster is a great little flash game where you have to build a tower using bricks in numerical order before the computer finishes. It's really catchy, and hey, there are funny little Romanesque characters battling evil Vikings. Great fun to be had by all!! I think I'm pretty good at this game. The basic strategy I use is to break down the tower into three seperate quadrants by dividing the range of numbers of bricks that are in play. Be sure to work for bricks in order to ensure super bonus points. Warning: It's highly addictive!

O'Franken Factor

O'Franen Factor is a new radioshow on the Air American Radio Network bost by Al Franken. This official blog will provide info about each days show as well as links to articles, etc. discussed on the program. You can even listen to the show live if you've sunk as low as to install Real Audio. I will not be for that simple fact. While I'm not American, nor do I fully agree with Al Franken's politics, I still enjoy listening to the man. I recently head him on the Howard Stern Show and enjoyed his frank, funny, and open discussion on the issues. Besides the fact that he totally hates Bill O'Riley. That's fine by me.

Boing Boing

I just read the award winning blog Boing Boing is having problems with bandwidth costs - which means that they're looking for interesting ways to fund the site. Things can be discussed in this thread. Boing Boing must survive. I would pay anything, see any ad or do anything I could just to ensure that the site operates. It's one of the first sites I visit every morning and I often return serveral times throughout the day. I can't imagine it not being there. While I'm on it, I just finished reading Cory Doctorow's second novel, Eastern Standard Tribe. I found it a very interesting and thought provoking read. Basically, it's pretty well summed up as outling a new kind of social group emerging that chooses to abandon its local standard time to live and work in stop with another more desirable one... It's really pertinent in this highly global world that we live in today. I'd recommend the book to anyone looking for an interesting read. It's available for free under the Creative Commens License - so there's nothing to lose in checking it out!

Kurt Cobain

While it's a sad topic to start with, I think it's fitting that I start with the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's sucicide. 10 years ago today, he took his own life and really effected a great amount of the youth (like myself) who were highly invested and dedicated to the music that he produced. The Globe and Mail has an interesting article that discusses. as the article says:
At noon today in New York, 10 years to the day since the shotgun blast that ended his life, a press conference will be held to announce "a major new investigation" into Cobain's death. Even though the book publisher Simon & Shuster, which is hosting the event, hasn't commented publicly, rumours are that a new book is about to be published, claiming that Cobain was murdered.
I must say - let the man rest in peace. Whether it was self inflicted or a murder of some sort, 10 years have passed. Leave him alone. We should remember his life in a good way. The memorable songs that he wrote that drastically changed the music scene forever. I think that this paragraph sums up things very well:
Angry and easy to play, Cobain's songs were perfect for 11-year-olds eager to make noise and irritate their parents. But they were also beautifully crafted, full of emotional immediacy and melodic ingenuity, and those are qualities that mark the best work of Cobain's truest musical heirs: bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, New Found Glory, Thrice and Saves the Day. None of them sound much like Nirvana, of course, but that's part of the point -- to take inspiration, and move on.

Here we go!

I guess I should start things off by introducing myself. My name's Greg and I live in Bolton, Ontario Canada. I'm finishing up by second year of Wilfrid Laurier's Bachelor's of Business Administration program and I love every minute of it. I'm an avid user of the internet and I frequent sites such as boingboing, monkey filter and wikipedia. I basically think that this blog will be a compendium of a whole wack of links, quirky sites and just interesting thoughts that I might have on things. I'm always finding interesting things that I want to show my friends but.... they don't usually care. If I post them here, I'll feel like I'm telling the world - even if no one ever reads the site. I really try to learn at least one interesting thing on the internet each day, and I hope to be able to pass some of those along to you, the faithful reader. So that's basically it. Please come back soon and I promise to keep things updated. This is not going to be a week or two foray for me. The internet is my life.
